(TORONTO, Canada – Jan. 9, 2017) – Canadian prostate cancer researchers have discovered the genetic fingerprint that explains why up to 30 per cent of men with potentially curable localized prostate cancer develop aggressive disease that spreads following radiotherapy or surgery. The findings, published online today in Nature, could help clinicians personalize effective, targeted therapies from the moment of diagnosis, says co-principal investigator Robert Bristow, clinician-scientist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network.Dr. Bristow is also a Professor in the Departments of Radiation Oncology and Medical Biophysics, University of Toronto.

Canadian and Australian prostate cancer researchers have discovered a key piece in the genetic puzzle of why men born with a BRCA2 mutation may develop aggressive localized cancers that resist treatment and become lethal for up to 50 per cent of patients within five years. The findings, published online in Nature Communications, show that BRCA2-associated tumours are already pre-set to be aggressive, even before treatment. This is because the genes normally involved in regulating cell growth and division are abnormal in the BRCA2-associated cancers right from the get-go and therefore are resistant to therapy right up front, says co-principal investigator Dr. Robert Bristow, clinician-scientist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network.

Scientists have identified new genetic variants that affect the progression of Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease for which there is currently no cure.Surprisingly, these variants differed from the ones that increase risk of an individual developing the disease in the first place. In the UK, roughly 115,000 people suffer from Crohn’s disease.
