Chan Zuckerberg Initiative acquires AI startup Meta stat : ZD Net

as mentioned in CNETThe Chan Zuckerberg initiative, the philanthropic foundation launched by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, announced that it’s acquiring artificial intelligence startup Meta.
This is the first acquisition for the Chan Zuckerberg initiative since its launch in December 2015.
The Chan Zuckerberg initiative plans to upgrade the tool to make it more powerful and then offer it for free to all researchers.
“Meta uses artificial intelligence to analyze and connect insights across millions of papers,” wrote Cori Bargmann, Chan Zuckerberg’s president of science, and Brian Pinkerton, the group’s president of technology, in a Facebook post.
Based in Toronto, Meta built a search engine for the scientific community that parses through millions of academic research papers and presents the latest and most relevant results to users.

as informed in Meta’s search platform uses machine intelligence to analyze the number and quality of citations in medical journals and research papers, and then sorts them into the largest knowledge graph of its kind.
Search results are then ranked in order of importance, similar to how Google News search gives a higher rank to highly linked sources, thus making it easier to find the most relevant or authoritative research among the thousands of scientific papers that are published every day.
As TechCrunch notes, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative didn’t disclose how much it paid for the Toronto-based startup, but once the acquisition is complete, Meta will add a few more enhancements to the product before rolling it out free to all in the next few months.
“Going forward, our intent is not to profit from Meta’s data and capabilities,” Meta CEO Sam Molyneux said in a statement, “instead we aim to ensure they get to those who need them most, across sectors and as quickly as possible, for the benefit of the world.”
While that will undoubtedly help students and scientists save tons of time sifting through articles on PubMed, Meta can also help organizations decide where to direct their research budgets by identifying trends in certain areas of study or finding authors who have shown promising work in the past.
Chan Zuckerberg Initiative acquires Meta's scientific search engine

as informed in The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was established last September by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, pediatrician Priscilla Chan, to accelerate research aimed at curing the world’s diseases.
The multibillion-dollar Chan Zuckerberg Initiative announced its first acquisition today: a startup called Meta that is developing an artificial intelligence program for searching through scientific studies.
Google Scholar takes advantage of AI tools – as does Semantic Scholar, a search engine pioneered by the Seattle-based Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence.
However, Meta isn’t the only free AI-enhanced search and discovery engine designed for scientists.
Meta was founded in 2010 as a Canadian company by Sam and Amy Molyneux, a brother-and-sister team.
