CBS Boston : reported that Gov. Baker Prepared To Boost State Funds For Planned Parenthood « CBS Boston

according to Charlie Baker’s administration says it’s prepared to increase state funds for Planned Parenthood clinics if Congress blocks Medicaid funding for the organization.
I thank Governor Baker for his commitment to the health and wellbeing of Planned Parenthood patients.
Planned Parenthood supporters, including Democratic members of Congress, plan a rally on Boston Common Saturday to protest funding cuts.
I hope his fellow Republican colleagues in Washington, D.C. take note of Governor Baker’s leadership and follow suit.
A spokeswoman for the Republican governor said Baker strongly supports women’s health and believes Massachusetts has a responsibility to make sure Planned Parenthood services remain available for all state residents.

Baker Prepared to Boost State Funds for Planned Parenthood

Charlie Baker’s administration is prepared to increase Massachusetts state assistance for Planned Parenthood clinics should Congress block Medicaid funding for the organization, administration officials said Friday.
A moderate, Baker is pro-abortion rights and has supported Planned Parenthood in the past, a position that puts him at odds with more conservative members of his party in Washington.
Medicaid funds cannot be used for abortions under existing federal law, but many Republicans have called for defunding Planned Parenthood entirely because it performs abortions.
Dr. Jennifer Childs-Roshak, president and chief executive for Planned Parenthood in Massachusetts, thanked Baker in a statement for committing to protect women served by the clinics.
Democrats have faulted Baker for reducing state funds for family planning services by $180,000 during a round of budgetary cuts in December.

Gov. Baker Promises State Will Make Up For Possible Federal Cuts To Planned Parenthood

The Baker administration is promising that the state will make up for any federal funding cuts to Planned Parenthood.
The five Planned Parenthood clinics in the state could lose an estimated $2 million a year if Congressional Republicans successfully block Medicaid reimbursements to such clinics.
Congressional Republicans and prominent members of the Trump administration, including Vice President Mike Pence, have been pushing to defund Planned Parenthood for years.
According to NPR, Medicaid payments to Planned Parenthood clinics “pay for direct medical services provided to low-income patients, including contraception, cancer screenings and sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment.”
And federal courts have consistently blocked states that have tried to end Planned Parenthood’s Medicaid funding.
