Cancer Research Stating that More than 5000 cancer cases due to obesity

An evaluation carried out by Cancer Research UK estimated that 4,800 cases of bowel cancer in Scotland over the past decade had being caused by patients being too heavy. Professor Linda Bauld, Cancer Research UK’s cancer prevention expert, who is based at Stirling University, said the findings were a “huge worry”. MORE than one in ten cases of bowel cancer in Scotland are linked to patients being overweight or obese, according to new research. There are around 3,800 diagnoses of bowel cancer a year in Scotland, with the disease claiming around 1,600 lives annually. The estimates have been calculated by combining data on overweight and obesity prevalence from Scottish Health Surveys, official statistics on bowel cancer and research on the relative risk of developing bowel cancer according to body mass index (BMI).
