Three Family Members Struggle With Lyme Disease. With a growing number of Lyme disease cases in Minnesota, one family from Monticello has been hit particularly hard with three members diagnosed.
Joan Schuster and her two children, 14-year-old Alyssa and 13-year-old Jack, were diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2015.
An estimated 329,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with Lyme disease annually.
The infection spreads through the bite of a blacklegged tick, usually caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi.
Minnesota Department of Health officials say the number of cases in the state has jumped 142 percent in the past twenty years.
As it stated in NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — With tick season creeping in, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) called for a greater federal effort to fight against Lyme disease.
As 1010 WINS’ Roger Stern reported, Lyme disease cases hit a 15-year high in Brooklyn and on Staten Island in 2015 – the last year for which there are numbers.
“But just with simple education, many, many people who get Lyme disease could beat it in its early stages.”The tick disease law provides money for education as well as research and prevention.
With summer again upon us, Schumer called upon the Department of Health and Human Services to implement a law already on the books to aid in the fight against Lyme disease.
It is a disease that Schumer is personally familiar with after he himself was bitten by an infected tick.
