An investigation has found that McDonald’s, Burger King and KFC served ice in drinks contaminated by fecal pathogenic bacteria.
Neither KFC or Burger King were immediately available for a response when contacted by CNBC.
Four of the samples taken at Burger King and five at KFC were described as having “significant” levels.
Burger King’s response has also been widely circulated by media outlets: “Cleanliness and hygiene are a top priority for the Burger King brand.”
Coliforms were found in three samples of McDonald’s drinks, six of Burger King’s and in seven samples taken at KFC sites.
BBC One’s Watchdog team has found traces of poop pathogenic bacteria, also known as fecal coliforms, in Burger King, McDonald’s and KFC stores in the United Kingdom.
Thirty fast food restaurants were tested by Watchdog where they found that ice at three McDonald’s, six Burger Kings and seven KFC locations tested positive for the pathogenic bacteria.

The Liverpool Echo reports that the pathogenic bacteria was found in the ice served at all three fast food chains.
Four of the samples at Burger King and five at KFC had “significant levels.”
Fecal pathogenic bacteria found in ice at McDonald’s, KFC, and Burger King
A BBC undercover investigation has found fecal bacteria in the ice served at McDonald’s, Burger King, and KFC locations in the UK.
Burger King told Business Insider: “This report is an opportunity for us to emphasize our training procedures and ensure all operations and safety standards are upheld in all Burger King restaurants.”
The coliform pathogenic bacteria, which is found in human and animal feces, was discovered in three out of 10 ice samples from McDonald’s, six out of 10 samples from Burger King, and seven out of 10 samples from KFC.
“Like many UK food retailers, our ice is made by freezing drinking water using commercial ice machines.
KFC has shut down the ice machines at the affected restaurants and has inspected and cleaned ice machines in all of its other locations across the UK, a spokesperson for the company told Business Insider.
